DOWNTOWN BALTIMORE RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF AMERICA’S TOP ARTPLACES
BALTIMORE OFFICE OF PROMOTION & THE ARTS NAMED FINALIST
FOR ARTPLACE’S CREATIVE PLACEMAKING GRANTS
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts announces that Downtown Baltimore has been selected as one of “America’s Top ArtPlaces” for 2013. A report released by ArtPlace, an initiative to accelerate creative placemaking, names downtown Baltimore, along with 45 other areas in the nation’s largest U.S. metropolitan cities as Top ArtPlaces. According to ArtPlace, the selected designations have been successful at joining art, artists and venues for creativity and expression with independent businesses, retail shops and restaurants, and a walkable lifestyle to make vibrant neighborhoods.
The Impresa, Inc. consulting firm conducted the study for the America’s Top ArtPlaces. The Top ArtPlaces represent 33 of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. The cities that scored highest on a set of six indicators were selected as the Top ArtPlaces in the country. Indicators included: the number of retail and service businesses; the percentage of independent businesses; the neighborhood’s Walk Score; and the percentage of workers in creative occupations living in the neighborhood, in addition to the number of arts-related nonprofit organizations and the number of arts-related businesses. In addition, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, the official Arts Council for Baltimore City, has been named a finalist for ArtPlace’s Creative Placemaking Grants. The ArtPlace grants are awarded to organizations to accelerate creative placemaking across the U.S. The applicants represent the best of the 1,225 letters of inquiry from throughout the country, including the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and American Samoa. According to ArtPlace, the finalists were selected for their potential to transform communities through placing art and culture at the heart of portfolios of integrated strategies that drive vibrancy and diversity.
ArtPlace is a collaboration of 13 leading national and regional foundations and six of the nation’s largest banks. ArtPlace also seeks advice and counsel from close working relationships with various federal agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the departments of Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Education, and Transportation, along with leadership from the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Domestic Policy Council.
ArtPlace works to accelerate creative placemaking by making grants and loans; by striking important partnerships with those who share our passion; with solid but imaginative research; and with communication and advocacy that we hope will influence others to engage in this work.
